TASHMUHAMMAD NIYAZOVICH QORI-NIYAZI

(02.09.1897 – 17.03.1970)

T.N. Qori-Niyazi is a well-known mathematician scientist, doctor of science in physics and mathematics, professor, academician, Honored Scientist of Uzbekistan, laureate of Biruni State Prize.

He is one of the scientists who made a great contribution to the development of mathematics and higher education in Uzbekistan with his effective pedagogical activity and commitment to the training of scientific personnel.

T.N. Qori-Niyazov was born in 1897 in the city of Khujand in a craftsman family. His career began early, in 1916 he graduated from the Russian-language school in Fergana, where he began his career as a teacher. He participated actively in the establishment of the Kokand Pedagogical College and managed it from 1920 to 1925.

He was one of the first Uzbeks to enter the Central Asian State University, Faculty of Physics and Mathematics, and graduated successfully in 1930. From 1931 to 1933 he was rector of this university. Qori-Niyazi was the first Uzbek to be awarded the title of professor in 1931, and in 1939 awarded the degree of Doctor of Science in Physics and Mathematics. From 1939 to 1943, T.N. Qori-Niyazi led the development of a new Uzbek alphabet based on the Cyrillic script, which was successfully introduced into the public, cultural, educational and social life of Uzbekistan. From 1946, T.N. Qori-Niyazi worked as the head of the department of higher mathematics in the Tashkent Institute of Irrigation and Agricultural Mechanization Engineers.

T.N. Qori-Niyazi is considered the founder of Uzbek mathematical terminology, mathematical literature for higher and secondary educational institutions and a major specialist in the history of mathematical science. His more than three hundred scientific works were published. In particular, his monograph "Ulugbek's School of Astronomy", which was acknowledged as a famous discovery in the field of mathematics, was awarded the State Prize in 1952. Besides, in 1937 he published a book "Fundamentals of Analytical Geometry" and a three-volume book "Basic Courses of Mathematical Analysis." Under his supervision, the dissertations of seven doctors of sciences and more than 100 PhDs in Physics and mathematics were successfully defended.

In 1937-1940, T.N. Qori-Niyazi was the chairman of the Presidium of the Committee of Sciences of Uzbekistan, and the president of the branch of the USSR Academy of Sciences in Uzbekistan. From 1939 to 1943 he served as Deputy Chairman of the Committee of People's Commissars of Uzbekistan in the field of Science, Culture and Arts. The Academy of Sciences of Uzbekistan was established in 1943, he was one of the first to be elected an academician of the Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Uzbekistan, and in 1943-1947 he was the first president of the Academy of Sciences of Uzbekistan.

He was Deputy Chairman of the Presidium of the Society for the Protection of Historical Monuments and Culture of Uzbekistan, President of the Republican Council of People's Universities, editor of the journal "Science and Life" and a member of several scientific community councils and societies.

T.N. Qori-Niyazi participated in many international congresses and symposiums, in 1954 was a member of the International Astronomical Society, in 1968 was elected a member of the Head Assembly at the 12th International Congress on the History of Science. He had been on scientific trips to Japan, India, Italy, Bulgaria, Afghanistan and many other foreign countries for cooperation.

T.N. Qori-Niyazi is considered the elder of the intellectuals in Uzbekistan. Leading scientist Tashmuhammad Niyazovich Qori-Niyazi, who devoted his life to the development of science and culture, took an active part in the social and political life of society, devoted much energy to the education of youth, died on March 17, 1970, at the age of 73.
